Ajax, Ajax, Ajax what web application discussion would be complete without talking about one of the biggest buzzwords to hit Java development since HTML came out It seems like almost everywhere you go, companies are asking for developers with Ajax experience, which by the way is about as abstract as asking for someone with XML experience. Many new conferences have come out specifically for Ajax, and Ajax has become a hot topic at Java conferences as well. This is all for a good reason. Ajax gives the user the ability to have the page call the server asynchronously, pull back information from the page, and then update the page accordingly. This is all done without having to resubmit the entire page. Before Ajax, this type of functionality was available only through Java applets or Adobe Flash presentation tiers. Ajax stands for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML, which oddly enough is not a 100 percent accurate definition. Although Ajax is usually asynchronous, and usually written in JavaScript, and often deals with transmission of XML, none of these items is a must. You can send Ajax messages synchronously, you do not have to use JavaScript to send them, and your response can be an XML file but can also be a regular string. Ajax was a term originally coined by Jesse James Garrett, but was first developed by Microsoft in an attempt to deal with remote scripting.

Our first adventure in Ajax is going to be with the components that come prepackaged with Seam, and these are referred to as Seam remoting. Seam remoting creates JavaScript asynchronous calls to Seam-defined components. This way, you have an easy way to call any Seam-defined component and receive the response to process it. The response of the Seam call will be sent over to a method for final processing, if necessary. Usually this will result in the processing of a string to change text someplace else, but it does not have to. You could just be sending over the information for temporary processing. Sometimes no processing is necessary if you are only sending data to the server without requiring a response. This often happens if a site wants to periodically save data that the user inputs. Although Seam remoting does make asynchronous processing with Seam much easier, the one downside is that you cannot do any partial page updates.
