Using the Create Shared Folder Wizard If you want help sharing a folder, you can use the Create Shared Folder Wizard. You can access it from Computer Management (in the Administrative Tools folder). In Computer Management, open System Tools, Shared Folders, right-click Shares, and then choose New File Share from the shortcut menu. You can also run the wizard directly by typing shrpubw at any command prompt. Using the wizard, you can share a folder and configure NTFS permissions by choosing from three preconfigured basic share permissions or by selecting the Custom option to make the full slate of NTFS permissions available. However, even though you can use the wizard on a Windows XP Home Edition computer to specify different permissions for different users and groups, the permissions will not work because all network users are authenticated as Guests in Windows XP Home Edition and therefore have the permissions of the Everyone group. However, for Windows XP Professional, you might prefer using the friendly interface of a wizard when creating a network share.

Feature Description Use the new command-line tool DiskPart to perform disk-related tasks at the command line as an alternative to using the Disk Management snap-in. When you use DiskPart, you can create scripts to automate tasks, such as creating volumes or converting disks to dynamic. You can now extend most simple and spanned volumes after converting them from basic to dynamic. For more information, see Converting Basic Disks to Dynamic Disks later in this chapter. Use DiskPart to extend primary partitions and logical drives on basic disks that use the MBR partition style. Windows XP Professional x64 Edition supports a partition style called GUID partition table (GPT). The GPT partition style offers benefits such as support for volumes up to 18 exabytes and 128 partitions per disk. When you use the Disk Management snap-in, NTFS is the only file system available for dynamic volumes and for disks that use the GPT partition style. If you want to format dynamic volumes and GPT disks by using the file allocation table (FAT) file systems, you must use the format command at the command line. Dynamic disks are the mandatory storage type for volumes that span multiple disks. Therefore, before you upgrade from Windows 2000 Professional to Windows XP Professional, you must convert basic disks to dynamic if they contain volume sets or stripe sets created by using Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0.

Extend simple and spanned volumes that were converted from basic to dynamic. Extend basic volumes by using DiskPart. Use a new partition style for disks in 64-bit computers. Use NTFS when you format dynamic volumes and GPT disks by using Disk Management. Use dynamic disks to create volumes that span multiple disks.

Understanding NTFS permissions and the steps to configure them is beneficial and useful. However, the cumulative effect of group and user rights, and the least common denominator effect of NTFS level and network share permissions makes it important to understand how to identify and correct permissions conflicts and confusions relating to disk formats. This section presents several scenarios or case studies that point out some common problems and solutions when using NTFS.

If you are migrating from Microsoft Windows NT version 4.0, the enhancements in Table 12-2 apply in addition to those outlined in Table 12-1.

Feature Description Windows XP Professional offers two types of disk storage: basic and dynamic. Basic disks use the same disk structures as those used in Windows NT 4.0. Dynamic disks, which offer features not available in basic disks, were introduced in Windows 2000 and are supported and enhanced by Windows XP Professional.
