Briefcase is a tool that appeared in several previous versions of Windows and is also included in Windows XP. Briefcase allows you to copy files for offline use, and then synchronize the files when you are reconnected. Briefcase is not as easy to use as Offline Files and requires more manual synchronization work on your part; however, it does support synchronization of files using removable media (such as floppy disks or Zip disks) or Direct Cable Connection, whereas Offline Files requires file sharing via SMB, which limits you to files and folders you can reach over a standard network connection, such as Ethernet. This makes Briefcase the tool to use if you do not have a local area connection. It s also your only option when using Windows XP Home Edition. Briefcases act as containers, holding files that you want to synchronize with other systems, either across the network or on removable media. You can maintain as many briefcases as you need on your system, allowing you to synchronize different content from different locations.

Copying files or folders on NTFS volumes When you copy a file to a folder, the file takes on the compression attribute of the target folder. For example, if you copy a compressed file to an uncompressed folder, the file is uncompressed when it is copied to the folder, as shown in Figure 13-8.

It s smart enough to bring you only those suggestions that you can use in the context you are in and therefore removes a lot of potential errors for using a construct in the wrong place.

Once you ve created a briefcase, you need to insert files you d like to synchronize. To do so, simply drag the files into the briefcase. Then, when you re ready to use those files in another location, copy the briefcase to the remote computer (when using a network or Direct Cable Connection) or to a removable disk.

Copying files between FAT and NTFS volumes Like files copied between NTFS folders, files copied from a FAT folder to an NTFS folder take on the compression attribute of the target folder. Because Windows XP Professional supports compression only on NTFS volumes, compressed NTFS files copied to a FAT volume are uncompressed. Similarly, compressed NTFS files copied to a floppy disk are uncompressed. Caution

You can view the contents of a briefcase just like any other folder by double-clicking it. The first time you open a briefcase, you ll see a brief description of how Briefcase works, as shown in Figure 15-7.

When you copy a file from an NTFS volume to a FAT volume, any NTFS-specific properties associated with that file, such as permissions and data streams, are permanently lost.
