Before we start making use of Core Text in our code, an overview of how it works is in order. Unlike most of the new APIs discussed in the book, Core Text is a C-based API, rather than a set of Objective-C classes. For its home environment of Mac OS X, it was designed to be a unified API that could be used easily from both Cocoa applications written in Objective-C and Carbon applications written mainly in C and C++.
