32.1 ACP Digitally modulated signals are carefully designed to occupy speci c channel bandwidths as given by system speci cations. A fundamental relationship between the time and frequency domains is that any abrupt change in one domain consumes a great deal of resources in the other domain. For example, a lter that has a sharp cutoff in the frequency domain also requires a great deal of time for settling to a steady state in the time domain. Conversely, a signal that has abrupt changes in amplitude or phase with respect to time will occupy a signi cant spectrum in the frequency domain. Thus, system designers lter the digitally modulated baseband waveform so that abrupt changes occur more gradually, which helps to limit the amount of spectrum that the signal would occupy. In order for this baseband ltering to work properly, the amplitude envelope and phase of the signal must be represented accurately. If the amplitude or phase is distorted by components in the system, then the baseband ltering will lose its effectiveness and the signal will occupy additional spectrum. Some of the signal energy beyond what was originally speci ed will spill into the adjacent channels. The measure of this problem is called ACP, which is reported in terms of decibels below the main channel (dBc). The typical measurement application will provide a table showing the integrated power in the main channel and the integrated power (dBm) and relative power (dBc) in the adjacent channels. Figure 26.1a shows two tones presented to the input of an ampli er at 1.0, 1.1, and 1.2 GHz. Suppose that the signal that we are trying to receive is at 1.2 GHz. Figure 26.1b shows what the output spectrum would look like when the input signals are at low levels; no problems are occurring because there are no measurable intermodulation products. In Figure 26.1c we can see the effect of intermodulation products. Note that the third-order product appears right at 1.2 GHz, which is where we are trying to receive one of our signals.
