he need for a script development system became obvious to me when I wanted to modify scripts that were in use on a regular basis by me, by other users, or by cron jobs. I couldn t afford to have a script fail; that could result in anything from users not being able to access the system, to an invoice not being sent out. Since I was writing scripts for three or four different operating systems, a development machine for each was out of the question. I needed a method for continuous development on the target machine. The solution I came up with used three different directories: one for developing the scripts, one for deploying them, and one for backing up each version as it was replaced with a new one. The scripts under development have an extension, -sh by default, to distinguish them from production versions. The backups are renamed with a numbered extension that is incremented with each successive replacement. The extension is zero-padded, with three digits as the default. I also needed a configuration file to tell the scripts where to find those directories. I called the configuration file script-setup.cfg and placed it in $HOME/.config, as I have done with other configuration files throughout this book. The directories are created by the script-setup script.

To set up the directories for a scripting system, the user needs the ability to override the default names. A playwright might already have a directory called scripts in his home directory. A user s bin directory may be laden with anything but scripts (though if no other files use the -sh extension, there may be no conflict). A setup script needs to present a user with the default directories and file suffixes, and allow them to be changed according to one s wishes.
