The following comments re ect an interview that I had with Oleg Biryulyov, a portfolio manager for the JP Morgan Russian Fund The paraphrased comments address the questions: What are the major nancial themes for Russia s economy and How do these themes impact Russia The major nancial themes that are occurring with Russia are: JP Morgan is the biggest institutional investor in Russia Russia is a part of the EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) region and is about 65 percent of the MSCI Emerging Europe index Russia is one of the newest emerging markets, less than 20 years old However, Russia is now a dominant market There are four themes in play 1 A strong commodity cycle has been persisting for several years and, in addition to Russia, includes the Middle East and parts of Africa as well as Latin America Russia is fully participating in this cycle, not only through oil and natural gas but coal as well as iron ore The convergence of Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic (as well as other markets in Eastern Europe) by upgrading on the scale toward more developed markets (Convergence is applicable mainly to central European countries, as it is a process of expanding the European Union by adding new member countries Russia is unlikely to become part of the EU anytime soon) The consumption cycle is getting stronger with the growth of these economies, including Russia The eastern European region, including Russia, is going through a massive uplift in infrastructure; this region is as big as China, and therefore, this theme is likely to continue for a long time
